Overview
In Summary
Robert Gheradi established Mr Barval in 2015, on returning to Margaret River following his time working with leading Italian producers. The name "Mr Barval" is derived from Margaret River, together with the Italian regions of Barolo and Valtellina.
Robert is the owner, along with his wife Kellie. He is also the viticulturalist and winemaker. He is passionate about bringing old-world practises and the freedom of new-world experimentation to vineyard management and winemaking. Robert aims to always produce high quality wines from the best grapes available from across the Margaret River region.
Robert's philosophy and passion resonated so much with me from our very first conversation. That's why I approached him to be among the very first to work with, on my own journey in developing WineVine WA's information resources. Thanks Rob!

Comments:
All of the fruit is from the Margaret River region and is harvested by hand. The majority is sourced from growers elsewhere throughout Margaret River.
The bulk of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, all of the Merlot and Petit Verdot and a portion of the Nebbiolo come from the Wilyabrup area to the north.
The Viognier and the remainder of the Cabernet Sauvignon come from the central Walcliffe area.
Small parcels of Chardonnay, Marsanne and Nebbiolo come from vineyards in the far south of Karridale, where temperatures are significantly lower than the central and northern areas, whereby harvest of the same grape varieties is typically 2-4 weeks later in the season.
While Mr Barval Fine Wines does not actually own any vineyards itself, specific blocks/rows are leased and farmed, spread across approximately 14 sites.
Procured fruit, which is purchased by weight, is the third party growers' responsibility, whereas the fruit grown in the leased blocks is principally Mr Barval's responsibility. Consequently, this approach provides greater flexibility in wine style development and production risks are lower/shared.

Description:
Centuries-old winemaking traditions of Barolo influence the winemaking techniques utilised within Mr Barval's production. The high quality fruit comes from grape growers throughout the Margaret River region.
The main focus is on the classic varieties of Margaret River – Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
The wines are fermented with only indigenous yeasts, which arrive on the skin of the grapes from the individual vineyard where they were harvested, to ferment those very same grapes.
The fruit is basket-pressed, to provide the most sensitive juice extraction, in order to make handcrafted wines of balance, elegance and purity.
The winery production is approximately 1,500 cases per annum.
