Overview
In Summary:
Walkers Hill Vineyard is Western Australia's most inland vineyard, situated in the Eastern Wheatbelt amidst rolling farm land. It is 8 kilometers north of Lake Grace on the main road between Hyden, (Wave Rock) and Albany; approximately 350 kilometers from Perth.
Originally established as Walkers Wines in 1995. Bill & Angela Walker, who were then broad acre farmers, found that in one patch of ironstone on their land, nothing seemed to do well. With Bill's love of wine, he decided that wine vines might be a good alternative. He was advised against it, told that it's not grape growing country but Bill pressed on, ripped the sheets of ironstone into rows and planted the first vines.
The first acre of vines planted was Shiraz and first vintage was produced in 1998. Over the next 5 years Bill planted a further acre of Shiraz and also an acre of Chardonnay.
Efforts were rewarded, when the 2002 Shiraz was awarded a Gold medal at the Mt Barker QANTAS Wine Awards. Many awards were to follow for the Shiraz and the Chardonnay.
The vineyard was sold in 2009, with a change in the name of the vineyard by new owners. Then it was sold again in 2011, to Tania and Jared Bray, who changed the name of the vineyard back to Walkers.
