Blackwood Valley Region has lush pastures, rolling hills and forest. It lies inland in the mid-southwest of WA. Around 3 hours drive from Perth.
Blackwood Valley Region lies inland in the mid-southwest of Western Australia. It adjoins the Geographe Region to the northwest, the Manjimup Region to the south and the Great Southern Region to the southeast. Margaret River Region lies further away, roughly a one hour drive to the west.
Blackwood Valley is characterised by lush pastures, rolling hills and forest. it has more than 50 vineyards, the first being established with grapevines planted in 1976.
There are approximately 309 hectares of vineyards.
The historic settlements of Boyup Brook, Bridgetown, Balingup and Nannup, have attracted many artisans and musicians to the region, offering a diversity of cultural experiences.
Climate & Soil
The region has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and wet and relatively cool winters, which combined with well-drained gravelly loams, provides ideal grape growing conditions. Altitude ranges from 35-379 M. Average growing season rainfall is 187 mm and the mean temperature is 21.5 C.
Top Grape Varieties
Main varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz (Syrah), Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
The Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted grape, typically exhibiting flavours of blackcurrant and dark chocolate. Shiraz plantings are increasing and deliver the expected spice on the nose and palate. Chardonnay is rich with flavours of ripe melon and peach. The Sauvignon Blanc is aromatic with flavours of stone fruit, grass and citrus.
