Peel region covers a relatively large area, running from coast to hills and forest. It's geographical size belying the fact that it's the smallest wine region in Western Australia by vineyard area. Around 1.5 hours drive from Perth.
Peel region surronds the aquatic city playground of Mandurah on the coast and runs inland quite a way; reaching as far east as do the most easterly land-locked regions of Manjimup and Pemberton.
The first vines were planted in 1857 but the region did not really take off until the 1970s.
Peel has approximately 52 hectares of vineyards. It is the smallest Western Australian wine region by vineyard area.
Climate & Soil
Peel region's Mediterranean climate is is influenced by the ocean as sea breezes bathe its western reaches. As we move inland, temperatures drop as altitude rises up into the Darling Range. Altitude ranges from 0-592 M. Average growing season rainfall is 177 mm and the mean temperature is 23.4 C.
Top Grape Varieties
Shiraz and Chardonnay are the region’s signature wines. Chardonnay is planted in most vineyards and produces a range of styles, from refreshing and elegant to rich and buttery. Chenin Blanc was the first white grape to be planted in the region, and is producing wines that can be aged for up to five or more years, increasing their complexity in flavour and aroma. The Shiraz typically exhibits ripe berry flavours. The Cabernet Sauvignon wines vary in style depending on the altitude at which the grapes were grown.
